What’s Wrong With Me?

So many of our clients who are living with flashbacks, intrusive memories or who feel that there are things that they just can’t speak about, ask if they can be fixed. That would imply that there is something wrong with them. There is nothing wrong with them. Something happened to them and they have an amazing defence mechanism which protected them. That defence mechanism often just hasn’t realised that the threat is no longer there.

It’s a bit like an operating system for a computer. When you sign up to Windows or to IOS for Mac then, at regular intervals, you receive a notification to say that there is a ‘critical update’ available for your system. If, over many years, you keep ignoring or don’t notice that these updates need to be installed then your computer will eventually not work very well! Sometimes, if you wait long enough, you’ll need a whole new operating system!

It is possible to update your operating system, even if it was installed decades ago! It’s possible to live life in the now as an adult and not keep being hijacked back into the past. It takes time, it takes courage and it takes perseverance but it is possible. There are tools and techniques which can help manage symptoms and there are ways to process what remains unprocessed. Resilience can grow and develop and life really can be lived to the full, now! Over the next few weeks, we’ll continue to explore what this might look like. Feel free to get in touch with us if there are particular topics you would like us to cover around this subject and if we can then we will.

Finally, one of the best things we can do to heal is to find ways to be kind to ourselves. Whether you are someone living with flashbacks or not, how will you be kind to yourself today and, in doing so, create a lovely positive memory?
